Many older get-go-time moms confront a dilemma when it comes to baby No. ii. The clock is ticking louder than e'er. But doctors suggest waiting at least a year and a one-half subsequently giving birth before conceiving once again.

This is the standard communication, based on multiple studies and public wellness guidelines. For older moms in a bustle, the bad news is that the written report adds evidence that conceiving inside 12 months of a birth does hateful heightened health risks for both female parent and child. But epidemiologist Laura Schummers, who led the research while at Harvard and is now a post-doctoral beau at the University of British Columbia, says at that place's good news for you hither as well:

The debate, Schummers says, revolves around whether the short interval is a straight biological crusade of the risks, or whether it information technology is itself a result of other forces at work in the mother'southward life — for example, a lack of access to health care and unintended pregnancies.

Because older women are likelier to plan their pregnancies and have better access to intendance, Schummers and colleagues hypothesized that those mothers would not incur as much risk as younger women do if they had babies close together.

They plant out they were wrong.

"In fact," Schummers says, "we establish that at that place were risks of adverse infant outcomes for women of all ages.

"The risks to the babies were higher among younger women, which was consistent with the team'southward hypothesis. But risks to the mothers were higher among older women — indeed, only older mothers incurred higher risks to their own health by getting pregnant again so soon.

After accounting for other factors that could drive these numbers, Schummers says, the stats shake out like this:

• For women 35 years or older who conceived just half dozen months after a birth, 6.2 per thousand experienced serious illness or injury, including decease. Look 18 months and that risk dropped to ii.vi per per thousand. So, small accented numbers just a dramatic difference.

• A "severe adverse infant consequence" includes stillbirth and being born very early or very minor. Amongst women ages 20 to 34, those who conceived after just six months had 20 babies per one thousand with those astringent outcomes; the risk drops to 14 per thousand amidst those who waited 18 months.

The inquiry turned up a similar pattern for premature nativity: A short pregnancy interval raises the risk for all women, but particularly for younger women. For women over 35, the risk dropped from 50 per k at six months to 36 per thousand subsequently 18 months.

Information technology seems like common sense that a woman's trunk may demand more than six months to fully recover from building a babe and giving birth, but the actual mechanism behind the risks of brusque pregnancy intervals is non fully articulate.

The leading theory, Schummers says, is that nutrients like iron or folate could be depleted in the mother's torso. Simply more research is needed to see if that theory holds in developed countries like the United States and Canada, or if there are other mechanisms that have not yet been identified.

For now, she says, her squad hopes these new findings can assist women brand decisions within their ain personal contexts, and in consultation with their medical teams. The data may be specially helpful for older women, she says, considering they more than often decide to have short pregnancy intervals on purpose.
